good to be here to have you. >> and it's so warm out. >> yeah. it is, it's so mild, as we say, set to sweat. >> i'm loving it. i am too, actually. >> it's like 70 degrees when i left the house. >> it's pretty incredible. yeah. that's going to set the stage for a really warm afternoon. some of the warmest air since last october is about to move in this afternoon, so get ready for summer like weather again this afternoon. a live look from the exploratorium camera. we have totally clear skies like sue was mentioning. i mean, we have temperatures right now that are pretty close to 70 degrees. look at santa rosa right now. we're at 6865. in the city. it's 66 in oakland. so it's already very mild out there this morning. and this is the launching pad to really get us into a very warm afternoon later on today. looking at wind speeds. we still have a wind advisory in effect because we have these offshore winds gusting over 20mph at times. and that's why oakland, napa, santa rosa are so warm this morning in the 60s because this is a warm wind. so looking at your day planner today, you certainly want to dress in light layers, light colored clothing because temperatures today are

warm to hot. the coast is in the 70s, but away from the coast we're well into the 80s. it gets even hotter here. tomorrow we'll show you those numbers coming up in a few minutes. let's check in with sue and see how traffic's doing. >> pretty light out there so far. drew, we do have your morning commute underway over the altamont. we'll check on that in just a minute. but you can see the eastshore freeway is moving nicely. golden gate bridge, absolutely stunningly clear. morning. no visual impairments with fog. take a look at the altamont. already slow, about a 33 minute drive time headed from tracy, up and over the altamont into livermore and dublin pleasanton. and we do have a high wind advisory over the altamont as well. so hang on there, guys. >> all right, thanks to bart's financial situation is bad and it's only expected to get worse. >> transit officials believe voters approval of a tax measure may be the only hope for survival. today, the agency will discuss its latest budget projections, as they show bart will run out of nearly $2 billion in state and federal funding around april 2026. that money has been making up losses

from lower sales tax revenue and fewer riders since the pandemic. by 2027, the agency expects to face a $385 million deficit, the chronicle reports. the ballot measure could raise $1.5 billion annually for bart. if that does not come through, we could see drastic cuts, including closing entire stations and ending weekend service. >> tesla appears to be under a hiring freeze in north america. the company currently has just three openings on its jobs board. an archive version of tesla's website shows there were 3400 open jobs in the us, mexico, canada and puerto rico at the beginning of the month. this comes a month after tesla laid off about 10% of its 140,000 person workforce, some are. internships are also reportedly revoked for some students as happening today. >> california utility regulators are set to make a big decision about our electricity bills. they are scheduled to vote on a

proposal that would change the way private owned utility companies like p-g-and-e's can bill customers. if approved, most people would notice two changes a $24 per month flat rate and a lower electricity usage rate. the flat rate fee would be used for things like grid maintenance and wildfire mitigation, which are currently included in the usage rate. >> going to make utility bills more affordable for low income households. that will reduce the volatility of month to month bills, and it will promote electrification. >> if this proposal is approved, the new billing structure would take effect next year. >> on the peninsula, new parking meters are causing a lot of frustration for some people. they recently went up in downtown san bruno, abc seven news reporter laura martinez tells us. neighbors and business owners are taking issue with it. >> this is an urgent matter. we need you to deal with this now. not in a week, not in three weeks. >> a brand new paid parking

program in downtown san bruno is frustrating. small business owners rebecca milano owns one love cafe, so the biggest issue right now is that people are being forced to pay for a full hour. >> so there is no incremental parking on the main streets. >> on april 1st, the city of san bruno rolled out their pay by plate kiosks on downtown streets and parts of el camino real. in some areas, it requires payment seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. i paid two hours for a 30 minute swim lesson. >> i feel like in san francisco, most of them, it's just like an up arrow down arrow. and you do like a quarter of an hour increments. like something like that would be a lot easier and seems pretty intuitive. >> on wednesday evening, milano hosted a community meeting inside her cafe to address concerns. city council members tom hamilton and marty medina attended. they heard about kiosks not working properly or businesses hurting because customers are only trying to park for a few minutes. not for hours. >> we're making sure that the

message is loud and clear. it's ultimately up to the council to listen to our community, to provide the feedback through our city manager to request a change. >> the two city council members at the meeting said, right now, they are working with city staff to adjust the time increment so people aren't required to pay an hour or two. there's a lot of times people come here for one minute and go and it's not worth it to get $50 ticket. >> it's too much, it's too expensive. they don't work, just fix it. but the response that we're getting back is that it takes time. and as small business owners with no resources, time is something we don't have in san bruno. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. happening today a key vote in the saga over a potential name change for oakland airport. >> they want to add san francisco bay to its name. san francisco. not a fan. abc seven news reporter ryan curry live at oakland international. to sort this whole thing out, at least try to. hi, ryan. >> yeah. hi, reggie. good morning. city attorney david chu

sent another letter to port commissioners asking them to not go through with this plan, urging them to reconsider before their vote today, saying that if they don't, he will still proceed with a lawsuit to try to fight this proposal. city attorney david chu saying in that letter he they want both sides to work together and find ways that would benefit both airports. he filed a lawsuit back in april claiming the proposed name change will create chaos and confuse millions of travelers. he also says it infringes on sfo's trademark. the board, the port board voted unanimously to change the name back in early april and told abc seven back then. sfo cannot lay claim to the geographically descriptive term san francisco, let alone claim exclusive rights to the san francisco bay. the port trust that travelers understand the san francisco bay , like virtually every other major metropolitan area throughout the world, can contain more than one airport. david chu responding yesterday saying if oakland continues to

rebuff our offers to partner, we will have to move forward with next steps in our trademark lawsuit. he went on to say, this is back in collaboration. they want to be able to make this work for the benefit of all passengers. that's why he says they want to work together. but the port of oakland, having their own reasons why they want to proceed with their name change, saying that they want to make sure people know where oakland is and how close it is to san francisco. but for now, reporting live at the oakland international airport. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> ryan, thank you. >> this morning, we're remembering former peninsula congressman and environmentalist pete mccloskey. he died yesterday at the age of 96. mccloskey served seven terms in the house from 1967 to 1983. many considered him a maverick republican, staunchly against the vietnam war and the first member of congress to publicly call for the impeachment of president richard nixon. he also co-chaired the first earth day in 1970, and helped write the

federal endangered species act. mccloskey served in the marine corps during the korean war, where he was awarded the navy cross and silver star. he spent the last 20 years of his life farming in the sacramento valley. former bay area congress member jackie speier says pete mccloskey was a mentor, and she visited him about a month ago. she has a treasured gift from him, a purple heart that mccloskey received for serving in the korean war. >> this is one of my prized possessions, having served in congress. i don't know if you can see this, but, he presented this to me, midway through my career, and he said he wanted me to have one of his purple hearts because he said there was no equivalent medal for a civilians who have served and been wounded and, he thought this was one way of rectifying it. so it's a treasure. >> speer also shared with us a picture taken last week of mccloskey and his wife, helen. speer calls it a beautiful

depiction of true love. >> time now, 509. we'll take you to oakland this morning. a live look outside. we have clear skies up above. look at the current temperature. right now we're sitting at a warm 66 degrees and part of the reason, well, a big reason why this northeasterly wind, that's an offshore wind. and when we get offshore winds, there warm at night and they're dry. so humidity is down to 28. so you can feel that lower humidity out there. but with temperatures starting out in the mid 60s right now, that is going to get us into the 80s later on this afternoon. in fact, we are set to sweat later on today. today is the warmest air since last october for a lot of cities. so we're back into that season where may can be cool or it can be hot. and today is one of those afternoons where we will be hot out there. here's future tracker temperatures, or by 10 a.m. we're already into the 70s. that does include the city as well. by lunchtime we're in the mid 70s, if not the low 80s. and

then later on today, look at this san francisco going into the 80s for the first time this year, mid and upper 80s and our warmest spots away from the coast. and it's even a pleasant afternoon and into the evening hours, we'll have those temperatures still pretty mild, so a high of 81 today in the city. we're hitting 84 in oakland, 87 in san jose, 88 in santa rosa, 88 in fairfield and concord, even half moon bay is warm today at 73 degrees. so we're warm to hot this afternoon. then tomorrow it gets even hotter inland with 90s making a comeback for the first time this year. and that heat holds on for the weekend as well. we'll preview mother's day on sunday reggie aqui coming up in just a few minutes. >> drew. thank you. a commitment to divest from israel still ahead. the first public university in the state to side with pro-palestinian protesters and supporting small businesses in san francisco. >> the proposal that could help pandemic recovery. millions of americans remain under severe weather threat this morning. >> several states reporting tornadoes. one person has died and communities are flatten

ummc. abc seven news reporter tim johns tells us the measure could end up on the november ballot. >> tax relief could soon be coming to thousands of businesses around san francisco. on monday, two business leaders submitted a proposed measure that would overhaul the city's tax system. lori thomas, the executive director of the golden gate restaurant association, was one of those people. >> we know that any relief we can give, even if it's a couple thousand dollars a year to our small businesses, is a nod in the right direction. >> if passed by voters in november, the proposal would simplify the city's notoriously complex tax system. it would also allow small businesses with revenue under $5 million to be exempt from business taxes, up from the current level of 2 million. it's a move that proponents say would allow for more business expansion and hiring. >> almost 90% of our restaurants , 60% of our retail businesses would be completely exempt from

our gross receipts tax at the palette tea house in ghirardelli square, owner dennis long says he supports the proposal. >> anything that can help small businesses will definitely be welcomed, dennis says. >> after rising in 2021 and 2022, the palettes business actually started to decline again last year, a contrast to the other restaurant he owns in san mateo, where dennis says doing business is simpler. >> there's a lot of extra fees, and here and there, here and there in san francisco, that makes running a business more difficult or more challenging than in other cities. >> in order to offset the costs of the proposed tax breaks, thomas says rates would rise again in 2027, but she hopes a three year window would allow more small businesses to recover back to their pre-pandemic levels before absorbing the additional costs. >> if you didn't make some of these changes, you were going to lose that money anyway. employers might pull out, they might not bring people back to work in san francisco.

>> tim johns, abc seven news if you still haven't filed your 2020 tax return, yes, the one from four years ago, time is running out to file it and get a refund. >> the irs says it still has a billion dollars in unclaimed refunds from 2020. this week, it issued a final reminder of the may 17th deadline to file to get your money. usually you have three years from the original april deadline to file and get a refund. the irs extended the 2020 deadline by a year due to the pandemic, and in today's gma first look, customers are voicing their outrage over rising fast food prices. here's abc news reporter becky worley in this morning's first look. >> fed up over rising fast food prices. >> when did mcdonald's get so expensive? >> give some consumers like colleen pipes of fort lauderdale , florida, are saying enough is enough. >> i joked that this was fine dining now because i might as well go at a sit down restaurant

and be served if i'm going to pay those type of prices. >> fast food prices in march were 33% higher than 2019 levels, according to the labor department, while grocery prices were up 26. and it's influencing behavior, companies like starbucks and mcdonald's reporting a downturn in traffic at starbucks. a 7% drop in transactions means, you know, i don't think i'm ever going to go to starbucks again. >> and coming up at 7 a.m, we'll have more on how customers are fighting back, both in restaurants and in the grocery aisles with your gma first look. >> i'm becky worley, abc news, oakland, california the developing news severe weather has left a trail of destruction across multiple states for the 14th day in a row, and more is on the way today. >> in the past 24 hours, three people were killed in tennessee and north carolina. a state of emergency declared in gaston county, north carolina, last night where a powerful storm took down highway signs and power lines. one person was killed by a falling tree. >> if you go by sims park, the

winds were so strong that blew the wall down. so there's a lot that's happened here in gaston county. there were catastrophic. >> the highest risk for tornadoes today will be in alabama and georgia. >> for us, it's all about the heat today. and those temperatures are already quite warm outside this morning. look how many cities are in the low to mid 60s right now from oakland to san francisco to santa rosa, pretty close to 70 degrees right now. and this warm air is just going to quickly accelerate later on throughout the morning and into the afternoon. we'll have some of the warmest air since last october. here's a look at the forecast. we break it down region by region today. inland, it's warm if not getting hot out there in the upper 80s for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. we're almost as warm going into the 80s with lots of sunshine along the coast. we'll hit the upper 60s to the lower 70s today, so no matter where you are, it's full sunshine and it's warm out there. so let's take a close look at our highs today. we're set to sweat today

with 87 in san jose, 83 in cupertino, 85 in gilroy along the peninsula. it's a warm 187 redwood city, 83 in palo alto, 84 in los altos. even along the coast, half moon bay, pacifica low to mid 70s for daytime highs. downtown san francisco. we'll go to 81, the first 80 degree day of the year and the warmest since last october. in the north bay. it's warm, 88, santa rosa 86. in novato, 85. in napa, even stinson beach is warm at 77 degrees, a high of 84. in oakland today, 85 in fremont and inland, we're in the upper 80s from 88 in brentwood and concord to 85 in pleasanton. it's a warm evening on the way with weakening winds. temperatures are very mild even through 9 p.m. we're still in the mid 60s, so overnight tonight we'll keep mainly clear skies a little bit of fog is going to redevelop right along the immediate coastline, but away from the coast we will have clear skies, but that marine layer tonight will bring some coastal cooling. tomorrow. however on the accuweather seven day tomorrow,

of an offshore wind. it's gusty from time to time in oakland, parts of the north bay, but throughout the afternoon the winds are actually going to calm down. so live. look at oakland this morning with clear skies up above. it's mild already. we warm up fast today and by the afternoon it is warm to hot 70s along the coast, away from the coast, mid and upper 80s for your daytime highs. hi sue, good morning drew and good morning everyone. >> we have a couple of incidents out there that we need to alert you to. first up we'll go to south san francisco with an accident. i just was seeing a post on x about a stopped traffic. a woman said she was stopped for ten minutes. this is a solo spin out middle lane, southbound 101 near airport boulevard. you're backed up in towards the sierra point area and then over in castro valley. we have a big rig that was on the shoulder and apparently it hit a guardrail. now it's blocking the two lanes, two lanes north to 80 near hesperian, and you are bumper to bumper from castro valley towards 880. so heads up those

two problems. also windy on the altamont pass. all right. >> so thank you. happening today, the port of oakland is set to vote on finalizing the new name of the oakland airport. it would be called san francisco bay. oakland international airport. the city of san francisco is once again warning them to stop. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is live at oakland international, and ryan san francisco is urging oakland to come up with a different name . >> yeah, that's right, amanda city attorney david chiu sending another letter to the port commission urging them to find common ground, wanting to work together. and he says if they don't, he will move forward with a lawsuit to try to prevent this from happening. the port argues a rebrand is necessary to let travelers know oakland is part of the bay area and is in close proximity to san francisco. chiu filed a lawsuit back in april claiming the proposed name change will create chaos and confuse millions of travelers. he also says it infringes on sfo's trademark. the port board

first ones to bring you this story. last week on abc seven news, terry williams has lived in san francisco's alamo square his whole life. he is a dog walker. last weekend he received a second package that included death threats and numerous racial slurs. san francisco naacp president amos brown addressed the incidents yesterday, and they're telling him. >> black man, get out of here. we are taking over alamo square and how dare you be professionally a dog walker? >> the police department is investigating. these rallies will be held on saturday at alamo square at 1030 and 430. >> frustrated families living in san francisco are demanding a change to how crime tips are reported, such as murder, cold cases. abc seven news reporter

tara campbell is hearing from those still waiting for justice. >> the faces of some of san francisco's unsolved homicide cases cash rewards up to $250,000, the highest in the country yet not a single payout in more than a decade. kind of slap in the face to all the families that, their loved ones were murdered. anna oliver is one of hundreds of family members who've spent years waiting for some progress. her brother pierre was beaten in 2008 and died of his injuries the following year. >> i don't see resolution. it's been so long. >> san francisco's doled out about $360,000 in reward money in seven different cases starting in 2001, the last payout in 2013. >> it's time for them to step up and, talk about this and try and help families to get some type of resolution for their loved

ones. >> and the san francisco police commission is doing exactly that. >> what i would love to be able to do is to look at what other jurisdictions are doing and see if they're doing things differently than we're doing that have shown some success or some promise. >> listening to a city report wednesday suggesting the city's policy might be too restrictive, not giving awards to the anonymous tipsters, and then also requiring that the tip lead to a conviction. >> asking the head of sfpd's homicide unit for some insight. >> i personally don't have any concerns regarding anonymous tipsters, being paid money to receive information. i think it would be a big help for my unit personally, to solve some of these cases and bring closure. >> meanwhile, chief william scott is warning it's about more than loosening up the rules. he says there's a real fear of retaliation that must be solved. >> that's a huge hurdle, particularly for violence and homicides that, are gang related

hey >> good morning, 539 and the big headline today is that we are going to see some of the warmest air this afternoon since last october, san francisco going into the 80s for the first time this year, a lot of areas like oakland, san jose seeing their warmest afternoons since last fall. so we are set to sweat today. here's a look at our forecast highs in the first column. everybody going into the 80s that includes the city, the east bay, the north bay, the south bay. no matter where you live, we're going into the 80s today and you can see that's well above average by some areas, 15 to 17 degrees warmer than where we typically land this time of the year. so looking at your out the door forecast this morning, we have clear skies out there a lot of areas actually starting out in the low and mid 60s. so that's the launching pad to get us to warm pretty fast today. already into the low 70s by 10 a.m. and then those numbers just continue to warm into the 80s. later on this afternoon, highs across the region today it's going to feel very warm 84 for a high in oakland. we'll go to 81 in the

is a school today after a scary incident yesterday. ten people are recovering after being exposed to carbon dioxide. at sunrise middle school, eight students and two teachers reported sudden breathing problems along with coughing, scratching throats and itchy eyes. >> the classroom of origin was a science lab, so we're assuming that it was some chemicals that were either in use that day or recently, or perhaps in storage in that area. >> the hazmat team evacuated that classroom, and the one next to it, and removed the source of that gas. two students were taken to the hospital to be evaluated. the other six were sent home with their parents. another incident at rapper and singer drake's toronto home. a man was taken into custody after he was seen trying to enter the property yesterday. it comes one day after a security guard was shot outside of drake's home and taken to the hospital. officials do not believe there is a link between the two incidents, but it all comes amid a public feud between drake and rapper
