fine moments captured on camera in east bay postal carrier robbed at gunpoint. and tonight the woman, shaken up, too scared to return to work. >> it's been really hard. i mean, it's like i can't sleep, i can't think, i mean, it's like my heart's pounding. tonight, the victims struggling to move forward. >> good evening everyone. i'm mike mibach and i'm julie julie haener. >> the robbery happened monday afternoon in a dublin neighborhood. the two men reportedly approached that postal carrier. one was armed. the u.s. postal inspection service says this is among at least six mail carrier robberies here in the bay area since last month. new at ten tonight. ktvu is amber lee joins us now live from dublin after speaking with this latest victim in amber. she's now taking at least a month off of work to try to process what happened. >> that's right julie. she is definitely shaken up but tells

me she's grateful that she wasn't physically harmed. now dublin police and the u.s. postal inspection service are jointly investigating this case and that the robbery was caught on tape. surveillance video shows the female postal carrier putting items into a mailbox in front of a home in dublin monday afternoon around 430, when suddenly a masked man, followed by a second person comes up from behind her. the postal worker, who asked not to be identified, describes being robbed at gunpoint. >> somebody came behind me and boom, just hit me and put a gun to the back of my head and he said, give me your keys. you don't want to die, do you? i go, no, no, no. so i reached in and got my keys, gave him my keys. he goes, where's your phone? you got two minutes. the carrier went to the mail truck to get her phone and handed it to the armed robber while fearing the worst. oh my god, i'm going to die! >> but the two men ran away after taking the keys to mailboxes and the truck along

with her cell phone, she went to a neighbor for help in calling 911. i thought he was going to shoot me when he was done, but i thought, well, i'm thinking in my mind, just stay calm, stay calm, stay calm. >> that's the best thing to do is stay calm. >> she says she did not suffer any physical injuries but is struggling with what happened. she tells me she's getting help from a psychiatrist. i feel anxious and i can't sleep and my heart is like pounding. still, she proudly showed me her uniform. she says she has worked for the us postal service for 33 years. the 63 year old tells me she had planned to retire in about a year and a half. do you think you'll be able to go back to work? >> i want to, i really want to, because i like my job, but i think i will. i love my customers. i like to serve them. >> one neighbor shared surveillance video of a possible suspect vehicle seen driving to and from the scene. it's a blue sedan. the mail carrier tells me

she's grateful for all the support she's received from neighbors and dublin police. the us postal inspection service is offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. >> julie, mike and amber, you learned that there have been other robberies in the past month of postal workers. have they been in this same area in the east bay or are they happening elsewhere? >> well, the postal official told me there's been one in gilroy and stockton and elsewhere in the bay area. >> all right. that video is just it is terrifying. amber lee reporting live for us tonight in dublin. amber thank you. a man has now been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a deadly shooting in oakland on sunday. 43 year-old justin jenkins is charged in the death of 61 year old michael seymour. police say seymour was inside his vehicle at 12th street and lake merritt boulevard when he was shot. jenkins was arrested the following day and a loaded gun was recovered. district attorney

pamela price said the charges include a gun enhancement. she said. our prosecutors reviewed the evidence in this case and filed the appropriate charges in our pursuit of justice for mr. seymour and his family. i commend the oakland police officers for their swift and thorough investigation and prompt arrest of the alleged shooter. >> new at ten a former tesla employee is speaking out after he fell victim to the company's ongoing layoffs. and just this week, the electric vehicle maker started eliminating thousands of job postings. ktvu is joey horta live tonight from tesla's factory there in fremont, where the former employee once worked. joey >> yeah, mike. we keep hearing about the numbers of people laid off, but tonight we sit down for the first time with someone who is one of the many who actually lost their jobs here without warning. nico murillo is a proud tesla owner, mainly because he's part of the team that built these cars at the tesla factory

in fremont. but on april 15th, his dream job would sound more like a nightmare. >> i was on my way to work and then i got a personal email about, my position had been eliminated. reporter. >> in disbelief, he showed up to work. >> i got my badge. i went to the turnstile, and then, then it didn't work and it turned red, started beeping, and i was like, is this real? >> morillo is just one of the roughly 14,000 tesla employees to be laid off since april. 10% of the company's workforce over the course of five years, murillo would climb the ladder to production supervisor are committed to his career. he'd spend much of 2023 sleeping in the back of his car monday through friday after every shift, showering the facilities all to avoid the daily three hour round trip to his house in the central valley. tesla's latest move, going from more than 3000 worldwide job openings

on its website to just three one tech expert suggests. elon musk, posting his opinions on social media is partly to blame for the company's current slump. >> what elon musk did with x or twitter was not helping. it's turned off some of the people who didn't want to be associated with the brand like that, professor ahmad bonafe explains. >> the popularity of hybrids, competition from china, concerns over battery replacement costs, and the lack of ev chargers across much of the country all contribute to tesla's trouble. plus, the industry as a whole is focused on the next wave in tech. >> i my analogy i played football, it's like things go wrong. the other team may get the ball and then, you know, you just got to work with what you got. >> now, he tells us he did not get any warning about these layoffs coming, but he did get offered severance pay. we did reach out to tesla tonight. they have not responded.

>> mike and joey, now that he's been laid off. i mean, what's murillo's plan? what's next year for him? >> so he's putting his house on the market. he's already done that. he's planning to go back to living in his car again. he says he'd rather invest in the stock market than pay a mortgage again at this point in his life, and we're happy to report he has landed on his feet and he got a new job as a store manager in pleasanton. >> all right, joey horta live tonight in the city of fremont. joey, thank you for that. shares of airbnb declined after hours on a disappointing revenue forecast. the san francisco based vacation rental company saw its stock price drop 7% despite a jump in earnings per share. but projected revenue for the quarter fell below wall street expectations, in part because of unfavorable exchange rates. overall, stocks did finish mixed for the second straight day on wall street, the dow was up more than 172 points. the nasdaq slipped by 29 and the s&p was flat. shares in san francisco based uber dropped nearly 6% after quarterly

results came in below analyst estimates. its rival lifts all shares increased 7% after topping expectations for profit and revenue. >> if they go into rafa, they haven't gone on rafa yet. they go into rafa. i'm not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with rafa, to deal with the cities, to deal with that problem. >> president biden said today he will not supply weapons that israel could use to launch an all out attack on the city of rafah in southern gaza. the president made those comments in an exclusive interview with cnn. this comes as the u.s. has paused a large shipment of bombs to israel, and as israel's military claims to have taken control of the border crossing from rafah into egypt. as the war now in gaza enters its eighth month, tensions remain high on high school and college campuses here nationwide. tonight, we learned that san francisco office of the council on american islamic relations and the arab anti-discrimination committee have filed a federal

civil rights complaint with the department of education. both organizations are urging an immediate investigation into reports of anti-palestinian, anti-arab and islamophobe discrimination within the berkeley unified school district . the complaint alleges several incidents of harassment and hate speech directed at students. >> enough is enough. seven months of families complaint that as they grieve the genocide in gaza, they also feel unsafe in their schools is intolerable. >> we have reached out to the berkeley unified school district for comment but have not heard back. >> anti-semitism also a concern at some schools in berkeley today, berkeley unified superintendent testified before congress answering questions and then defending her district over claims of hostility towards jewish people on campuses. and as ktvu jana katsuyama reports tonight, the superintendent's colleagues held a rally right here in the bay area to support her.

>> a coalition of parents and community members rallied in berkeley wednesday, saying that the berkeley school district overall is an inclusive community. >> i thought she did an incredible job today defending our district and the values we stand for. >> berkeley unified school district has been in the national headlines, and the superintendent, annika ford morthal, was called to testify along with the new york and maryland school officials before the house committee of education and the workforce in washington, d.c, answering accusations of anti-semitism at the schools. since october 7th, the district has had formal complaints alleging anti-semitism arising from nine incidents within our jurisdiction. california republican kevin kiley grilled the superintendent on the federal complaint by the anti-defamation league and brandeis center, reading some of the alleged incidents. >> incidents include students repeatedly hearing anti-semitic comments in classrooms and hallways, such as kill the jews, non-jewish students asking jewish students what their number is referring to, numbers tattooed on jews during the

holocaust, and jewish students being derided for their physical appearance and demonized as evil. >> the superintendent said there have been instances of anti-semitism, but it is not widespread, and that, along with islamophobia and other hate speech, have no place in the schools. >> our babies sometimes say hurtful things. we are mindful that all kids make mistakes. we know that our staff are not immune to missteps either, but can you just tell us in general, has anyone been terminated? in general, i can say to you that i can't speak about personnel matters. >> the superinten dent said accusations of inaction are not true. >> we do not publicly share our actions because student information is private and legally protected under federal and state law. as a result, some believe we do nothing. this is not true. >> parents at the rally in berkeley say they recognize the need to address hate speech of all kinds. i think there's there is, of course, anti-semitism in this country, including in berkeley, i'm sure. >> and there's also anti anti muslim racism and other kinds of hatred. more than 100 people

attended the rally, many with signs saying jewish palestinian solidarity. >> and that is something that the people here tell me they want to model for other communities. so that all children can feel safe. in berkeley, jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news and coming up tonight at 1030 as the protests continue on college campuses, one california university has come to an agreement with pro-palestinian demonstrators. >> the new policy at sacramento state, former bay area congressman pete mccloskey, is being remembered tonight as a political maverick. >> mccloskey died today at his home in winters at the age of 96. he served seven terms in congress, representing san mateo county. mccloskey was known as a liberal republican who later switched parties to become a democrat. he may be best remembered as the coauthor of the endangered species act in 1973, and co-founder of earth day. his law partners called him a leader dedicated to helping others. >> he taught us to do the right

people getting outside to enjoy the warm weather. we saw a lot of people wearing hats and sunglasses and there were ice cream trucks and snow cone trucks on hand to help people cool down with a tasty treat. >> it's the place to go, right? so it's so it's so hot today. so, you need to get get outside of the house and, this is the this is the best place to go get some ice cream. yeah, yeah, get some ice cream for sure. yeah >> a nice spring day across the bay area and more warm weather is on the way. >> nice to see those ice cream trucks. still going around the bay area. yeah. temperatures today. >> we got into the low 80s and then tomorrow goes even maybe mid 80s and maybe a low 90. so it's warming up. >> we haven't had mid or low 90s for no just be the first of the season. >> and i think it's going to happen especially probably tomorrow afternoon in the inland bay valleys. these are temperatures from today julie. and you can see they're they're a little warmer than they were yesterday. and they're going to work their way up another well in some cases 5 to 8 degrees. so we're going to see a warmer day

and future forecasts. >> a lot of excitement surrounding the san jose sharks, who will have the number one overall pick in the upcoming draft. it is the first time in franchise history they will have that pick, and fans are already gearing up to welcome a top prospect to the shark tank. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters live tonight in downtown san jose, with more about the new player who may be headed to the sharks, lamonica. >> mike macklin celebrini is expected to be the number one pick, and he's no stranger to the bay area. his family lives here and he's already played for the san jose junior sharks. >> last season was tough. you know, for any sharks fan, you know, it's, no one likes losing and all you can hope is that they're building for the future. right at o'flaherty's irish pub in downtown san jose, sharks fans say they're happy to hear the team will have the number one pick in next month's nhl draft. >> that means they'll have the chance to select 17 year old macklin celebrini. the sharks general manager, mike greer says celebrini has the talent and

dedication to play in the national and say, you know, i, i can i can possibly be that kid down the road. he was a junior shark celebrating his family moved to the bay area from vancouver back in 2018. >> his father, rick celebrini, is a former mls soccer player and is now the director of sports medicine and performance for the golden state warriors. >> so to have him in our own backyard, so to speak, and to, you know, mom, to bring him a meal every once in a while and do his laundry would be would be a lot of fun. >> san jose mayor matt marin also posted this video message on social media. >> like many sharks fans, i'm crossing my fingers and hoping that we will be able to welcome back macklin celebrini. san jose sharks junior al-um celebrini a standout player for boston university, also received the 2024 hobey baker award, which recognizes the best amateur hockey player in the country. >> we're able to think about how uplifting it is for this local guy whose dad is working in the

patient is a human right. we won't take it anymore. five. six. seven. eight. >> teachers say they need a fair salary that keeps up with the cost of living. so that they can afford to live in the community where they teach. they say they're at an impasse with the district after an offer that included no pay increase and tonight, teachers hoping that the school board will work with them to get a raise. >> we're hoping we're hoping that this is going to make a difference, because we know that our board is really responsive and does care about us. and so we're hoping when they see the impact of it that we'll get some movement and we'll be able to close things out. >> the district superintendent told the brentwood press that the district is in a quote, difficult place financially. he cited mandated expenses such as pensions and declining enrollment following the pandemic. >> nearly a dozen students and teachers at a san jose middle school are recovering tonight

following an accidental exposure to carbon dioxide. >> we were just, like, working and stuff, and then some people started coughing a lot, like really coughing. and then the teacher came and saw what was like trying to see what was happening. and then she started coughing. >> it happened this morning at sunrise middle school, san jose. firefighters responded after reports that eight students and two teachers were having difficulty breathing, as well as itchy eyes and nausea. the fire department says one classroom had elevated levels of co2. the exact source is unknown, but san jose firefighters say students were doing a volcano project with baking powder and vinegar. school officials said in an email. vapors from chemicals in a locked closet may have leaked out, possibly going through the hvac system. >> reaction of vinegar and baking soda. this leads to the production of carbon dioxide. you could probably, you know, breathe in some carbon dioxide

that can displace the oxygen that your body needs. >> two students were hospitalized as a precaution, but they are back home tonight with their families. >> fremont police arrested one of the suspects wanted for stealing two high end porsches. police say they identified 22 year old nova moore as one of the two suspects who drove the vehicles right off a showroom floor on april 4th. this was at the dealership located on crushing parkway. moore was arrested the very next day and attempted to discard a loaded handgun. a search of his residence uncovered several rifles, stolen property, money, and a police radio scanner. moore is now booked on several burglary and firearm charges. >> today, the oakland police department added two more names to its wall of fallen officers. the family of officers tuan lei and officer jordan wingate placed white roses to honor their memories in a ceremony this morning. officer tuan lei was shot and killed in december while responding to a break in at a cannabis store. officer jordan wingate died april 20th.

the airport as it prepares to change its name tomorrow. the port of oakland is expected to finalize the name change to san francisco bay oakland international airport. san francisco has sued, saying the name infringes on sfo's trademark that dates back to 1954. city attorney david chiu says he's urging the port to collaborate on a different name to avoid costly litigation.

>> president biden will be traveling to the bay area tomorrow night. he's in town to attend two campaign events on friday. we've learned. one fundraiser will be held at the portola valley home of the co-founder of sun microsystems. the president will then travel to seattle for campaign events this coming weekend. first lady jill biden also due to land in the bay area tomorrow on a separate visit from her husband. the first lady is scheduled to head to a political finance event in kentfield. her office says she will then fly to southern california on friday. >> governor newsom is planning on releasing his revised budget proposal on friday. in sacramento. last month, the governor signed a bill reducing that shortfall by $17 billion. the governor and state lawmakers agreed to a range of spending cuts delayed. spending and cuts to one time expenses, a report from the legislative analyst's office in february forecast a budget shortfall of as much as $73 billion by next year. lawmakers and the governor have until the end of june to pass a

budget for the next fiscal year. >> it has been one month now since california's fast food wage law went into effect, bumping up the minimum wage to $20 an hour. >> in response, many fast food businesses have now raised prices, and as ktvu crystal bailey shows us, some are even cutting employees hours. >> just about everything on the menu has gone up. >> customers are feeling the sting of the minimum wage increase in california. minimum wage for fast food workers went up to $20 an hour on april 1st. a month later, workers are excited to earn more money. >> to me, it is a big impact because as a low wage worker, i was earning 1820. >> pamela mejia says her hours have been cut at mcdonald's, so she has not seen the difference yet. it's happening at a lot of fast food spots, where managers are raising prices and reducing hours before we were not scared to pay like employees working 45, 42, 43 hours. >> now we are really concerned and just getting up to them for 35 hours to the most because

over time would kind of cost us a lot. >> sangeet kumar, the district manager over eight carl's junior's locations, says prices have gone up by about 7. >> it's very difficult for us to stay in business if you know the cost goes up and we don't make money, no business works without making a profit. >> he also says the company is looking into technology like ai to eliminate positions like this. taco bell down the street, which has kiosks instead of cashiers, where customers say they've seen their favorite menu items increase by around $3. it's honestly the same price as eating something healthy, so you might as well just grab something healthy. the consumer price index report says prices at quick service restaurants have jumped nearly 28% from 2019 through last year, and mcdonald's ceo blames the new minimum wage and inflation for declining profits in california. but at mejia's restaurant in the south bay area meeting yesterday, my employer had us
