time you do sports. no, thanks. next at 11. >> well, this program just makes fremont a safer place. >> we're using technology for good. >> it is a first of its kind program in the country. and tonight we are getting an up close look at the drone system helping protect an east bay city . >> the 11:00 news on ktvu fox two starts now. >> a partnership between fremont police and fire departments is already seeing success. hello again everyone. >> i'm julie julie haener and i'm mike mibach. the departments have teamed up for a program that uses drones as first responders, and in some cases, a drone can be on scene within 2.5 minutes. >> and new tonight ktvu is amber lee shows us this new technology improves safety for the public and law enforcement. >> this drone is part of a partnership between fremont police and fire. a remote pilot demonstrates a launch from the police department. the program is called dfr, short for drone as first responder, and it truly has been such a useful tool for

de-escalation for apprehension of violent suspects, for public safety. when a call for service comes into the 911 dispatch center, drone, 56 will be in route to that. a remote pilot determines if the call needs a drone response. drones are usually deployed for critical or life threatening situations. officials say they are not allowed to be used for random surveillance. i was the incident commander on this incident, fire battalion chief justin dillman shows me drone footage taken while responding to a house fire. >> one of our other battalion chiefs was the person operating the drone that was able to give me real life time intel, the drone is able to show exactly what's on fire. >> the drones actually looking for hazards, possible hazards that could affect either public safety in general or responding personnel. >> police say. >> this is video from a drone response to a call reporting a car break in. first responders say the device is thermal imaging ability pinpointed the location of a suspect. >> the suspect's right here, so he's hiding behind the trash

cans. >> the cfr program is in addition to officers and fire personnel who have drones with them. but police say drones deployed through the cfr program can respond much faster because they're launched right after the 911 call comes in, versus personnel with drones driving to the scene before launching. >> by that time, it's probably 15 20 minutes, whereas here we can deploy the drone within and get on scene within two minutes. >> and 30s police and fire launched this program in 2022. they say it costs $40,000 annually for software upgrades as they fly the drones about four days a week on ten hour shifts. >> this program just makes fremont a safer place. so by having drones over the air, we can get a lot, a lot better of a picture, so to speak. on what the actual call is. >> right now, the program has three drones and can only launch from here. the police department and respond to calls within a three mile radius. the goal is to expand and eventually cover the entire city by having five launch sites in fremont, amber

lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> a search and rescue team was out tonight looking for a missing 81 year old woman from danville. anna palma was last seen walking away from the area of verde mesa drive about 2:00 this morning. she was wearing a floral blouse and carrying a clothing bag. palma suffers from dementia. people who live in the area are being asked to review security camera footage and check around their properties, including their vehicles. anyone who sees her is asked to contact danville police. >> new at 11 tonight, a cupertino woman has been convicted of perjury for lying about her law enforcement experience as she ran for santa clara county sheriff anne colton certified that she had the required experience and her name appeared on the 2022 ballot. an investigation then determined that was not the case. she received just over 4% of the vote. district attorney jeff rosen called this a serious matter, saying, a case like this could prevent a legitimate candidate from making a runoff or winning outright. colton was sentenced to time served 134

days in jail. >> president biden and the first lady are in the bay area. the president landed at moffett field at 725 tonight. he then took marine one to marina green in san francisco. and then just hours earlier, first lady jill biden touching down at san francisco international, their joint visit, all part of a west coast fundraising trip as the november election nears, ktvu tory gains reports now from san francisco, where many people were eager to welcome the president to the city, the president touched down at marina green just after 8 p.m, where a small but dedicated crowd gathered just to catch a glimpse. >> i came here for a run with marina run club, and then after i finished the run, i was already out here. it was nice weather. so, you know, i thought i'd just, hang around and, watch the president come in. >> so this is my third time here today, so, yeah, we just came. i live, like, right over there, and we're just hoping to get a glimpse. >> the president was greeted by san francisco mayor london breed

portola valley for an event at the home of a local venture capitalist and billionaire. >> president biden in the first lady are expected to attend separate campaign events tomorrow. they're staying here at the fairmont hotel tonight. there were plenty of street closures here today, but that did not stop onlookers from coming out to snag a glimpse of the commander in chief in san francisco, tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> and not everyone is happy about the president's visit. a group of pro-palestinian protesters say they will stage a rally outside the site of his portola valley fundraising event . they say they want to send a message that he and the billionaires who support him are complicit for supplying israel with the means to kill civilians . in gaza, nurses at san francisco's public hospitals are now warning of a possible strike . dozens rallied outside laguna honda hospital. they say right now, staffing levels are extremely low and patient care could be affected. they're also warning that if the city doesn't take action in contract negotiations to increase

staffing, a strike is inevitable . >> our patients are, put in unsafe positions, you know, because if we don't have enough staff, they could fall out of bed. we have to make sure they get fed. we have to prevent them from having bed sores. you know, we have to make sure they get their overall care we need. we have to make sure they get all their daily needs met. and we're working short something is going to fall through the cracks. >> the san francisco department of public health says it has hired 166 new nurses since december, and is on target to hire an additional 50 by the end of this fiscal year. in a statement, the public health department says in part sf, dph has made significant progress in hiring and retaining permanent registered nurses as we continue to recover and stabilize operations after the pandemic. nurses are the backbone of care for sf, and the department is extremely grateful for their commitment. >> new at 11, california is getting $1.2 million from a $10

the state of utah. >> this story begins tonight's west coast wrap. it happened this morning in the mountains southeast of salt lake city, when snow gave way on a backcountry slope of lone peak. one skier managed to dig himself out and was taken to the hospital. two others died. the conditions in the area were too dangerous to attempt to recover their bodies. today the utah avalanche center says conditions on wasatch mountains changed rapidly this time of year, posing a danger for even the most experienced hikers and skiers. >> along with all of this snow and water, there is also some

very strong winds associated with this storm. this was like a cold mid-winter storm. the problem is for the snowpack right now in the spring, avalanche conditions can change in an instant. we get strong sunshine, rapidly rising temperatures or even a thin band of clouds that can greenhouse the snow and all of a sudden you're caught off guard. >> the names of the victims have not been released, but we do know they are two men, 23 and 32 years old. investigators say they have been in contact with their families recovery teams hope to be able to recover their bodies tomorrow. >> now to southern california, where a pro-palestinian encampment is growing. at pomona college in the city of claremont, several dozen protesters still have a visible presence on and around the main commencement stage. they vowed to remain in place and block graduation activities unless the college commits to divestment

weather starts to pick up. >> with temperatures warming up this week, i do like the heat, but not right now. >> i wasn't prepared for it. >> some people in san jose say they couldn't resist a chance to enjoy the water fountains at plaza de cesar. >> chavez got to enjoy this heat. you know, i'm a summer guy myself. i love the heat. unfortunately, their mom couldn't be with us today. she's at work. but i told her we're not sitting in the house. we're gonna come out and go to the water. >> i grew up with my mom and dad bringing me here as a kid. so i have my daughter now. so, you know, just coming full circle, trying to get get her out of the heat. have a good time. the warm weather is forecasted to remain throughout the week. >> jason clay with cal fire says as people head outdoors, they should remember to pay attention to how their body is responding to the heat. >> we just need to be mindful of our bodies, making sure that we're keeping up with our hydration, eating healthy meals that will fuel your body, giving yourself a break and just preparing yourself ahead of time. >> may 5th through may 9th is also wildfire preparedness week,

and clay says high temperatures can lead to increased fire danger. he says while people can enjoy the warm weather, being safe at home can prevent house and wildfires. >> when you're out grilling, you want to make sure that you don't have anything overhead so that heat can release. you're not grilling right up against the house and you're keeping your grill cleaned and maintained. is the biggest thing, clay says. >> people should also be careful not to create sparks, like when using a lawn mower or parking a hot car on dry grass. he also says we've had fewer wildfires in the last few years, but we all need to still be diligent to help prevent more wildfires. lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news bay area residents taking some time to enjoy the beaches on this thursday. >> this is sky fox video from ocean beach in san francisco. some people just relaxing in the sand. others grab the board and went surfing. chief meteorologist bill martin joins us now with that mother's day

forecast. hey, bill. >> yeah, that was baker beach. >> no, that was ocean there. oh, ocean. we did fly baker earlier too. >> yeah, that's what i thought. okay, so the fog has come back. fog at the coast. we've got fog kind of patchy along the coastal regions. it will continue to build each day as we go into the weekend. so nothing you haven't seen before. if you've lived here for a couple of years, you know how it goes. in springtime, the fog starts coming in and the valley, the inland or the inland areas stay pretty warm, the bay stays mild and the coast is usually a little bit cooler. temperatures today at the coast were in the low 80s. there's the fog. you can see it kind of towards the south tower wafting in sort of an unusual direction, isn't it, considering it's easier for it to gap through the golden gate bridge. right? that's the that's the sea level gap. the fog is actually going over the terrain as opposed to going through the north and south towers, which is the path of least resistance, if you will . so the high pressure has given us the winds or had given us the winds. the winds have died down. the wind advisories are gone. we did get the gusts. they verified

last couple of days we had some mid 50 mile an hour wind gusts on the on the hilltops, fog surging up from the south. which is exactly what happens when you get a couple of days of warmth, especially in the late spring or early summer. and the winds are coming more one of these. this doesn't show it very well, but they're more westerly in general than they had been, which is a cooler direction because the wind is coming off the water towards the land. the water is cold, the fog is cold and you know that. okay. so it is obviously way cooler tonight. 11 degrees cooler in santa rosa, sea breeze there, san carlos, five degrees cooler. the forecast highs tomorrow could still see and will see a couple low 90s inland tomorrow, but the coastal areas will drop a good 5 to 10 degrees. they were in the 80s. today upper 70s. they'll be in the mid 60s san francisco location downtown, south of market, upper 60s. perhaps the five day forecast looks like a good one. mother's day looks pretty awesome as well. just a little foggy at the coast, but it's exactly what you expect for this time of year. so a really, it's been a really good run of

weather this week. it's going to continue right through the bay area weekend. >> you guys all right bill have a good one. thank you. bart's board of directors says a proposed ballot measure could be the only thing that keeps the agency running. bart says average weekday ridership is still about 40% of pre-pandemic levels. and officials say by the year 2027, they could face an annual deficits up to $300 million. and that would potentially force the board to make drastic service cuts. state lawmakers have introduced a measure that puts a 30 year transit funding tax on the 2026 ballot for all nine bay area counties. board members say this could be bart's last hope. some riders say they worry about rising prices. >> it's ultimately up to the voters. the voters will decide bart is really the backbone of the bay area and our economy and the bay area won't be the bay area without transit service. >> we definitely do need a bart system. absolutely. it's really important, i just don't know if i want more taxes to go up because of the cost of everything right now. >> as of now, the board of directors does not appear to

have a backup plan. if the 2026 tax measure fails to pass a health care system in the south bay is rolling out a new fleet of ambulances. >> today, santa clara valley health care announced it has 12 new ambulances, which it says will significantly improve transport times between its three hospitals and 16 clinics. the santa clara county supervisor says the vehicles will make a tremendous difference for families that have complicated and urgent health care needs, as the health care system says, these new ambulances were made possible by donations from the community. >> kaiser hospitals on the peninsula are providing life saving gun trigger logs to parents of small children. doctors at kaiser redwood city in san mateo are giving the locks of parents who own guns and are storing them currently unlocked, the san mateo county sheriff's office donated 100 gun locks for this program. parents are discreetly offered the locks when they bring children in for checkups and fill out a screening questionnaire. it includes questions about health, safety and guns in the home.

new search engine, project or product, reuters sources say. the artificial intelligence company plans to announce its ai powered search engine on monday. the announcement could be timed day before the tuesday start of google's annual conference, where it's expected to reveal a lot of ai related products. openai declined to comment. the state will soon be testing artificial intelligence tools aimed at improving public services for californians. today, the state announced that agreements with five companies to develop the tools, including openai. they could be used to ease traffic jams and help people file their taxes, among other things. the companies will be paid $1 for their proposals. the state will test them for six months before deciding whether to launch them. >> apple is now apologizing for an advertising campaign for its newest ipad that drew criticism from musicians and artists. all the things you do give me a reason to feel my world are all

you. the commercial, released on ceo tim cook's expo page, shows a hydraulic press destroying and flattening musical instruments, paint a television, sculptures and other items. it then reveals the company's newest ipad pro model. advertising analysts said the spot resonated negatively with many people who saw it as an example of technology crushing creative industries. apple told the magazine ad age that the company missed the mark with the ad. the company has also planned canceled plans to run the ad on television and social media. >> the cybersecurity firm rsa is wrapping up its national conference at san francisco's moscone center. >> as ktvu christian captain reports tonight, the event is bringing much needed business to that area, and there are hopes for more to come. >> tropical music filled the warm spring air as an estimated

40,000 rsa conference visitors made their way in and out of san francisco's moscone center. charlie garrett is a bureau chief in charge of operations for south carolina's department of health and human services, and says he's enjoying his stay. i love it if y'all wasn't so expensive with costs and everything, i would want to move out here because the food is awesome, the environment is awesome. >> everything is just awesome. i've had a fantastic time now. >> restaurants in the area that struggled when the asia pacific economic cooperation summit in november shut down much of the south of market area, say the rsac computer security conference is completely different. the grove is just a block from the convention center and was packed at lunch, which david cohen says is great for his bottom line. >> i would be thrilled to have moscone as a prime convention center. busy 300 days a year, cohen says the visitors have been telling him they've enjoyed their stay. they've really been enjoying it. we see people who are regulars for this event, regulars for this convention coming back year after year, and

they say how happy they are to be back in san francisco. >> san francisco travel association says the rsa conference is the second biggest annual conference after dreamforce, and is bringing in an estimated $62 million to the city, one of the most important things we can do for san francisco is fill our convention center, bring meetings and conventions to san francisco. >> those folks are staying in our accommodations. they're eating in our restaurants. they're really stimulating the entire economy of san francisco. >> our visitor from south carolina says he's already planning on returning to san francisco. >> i'm already saving the date for the one that we got next year. i think that's around april 28th through like may 2nd. >> and one final note hotels in the area are either at capacity or are nearly at capacity. that means it wasn't all hands on deck situation. the hotel council says hotels called in all available workers to accommodate all of the visitors we have in town in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> the cal state university system is announcing the

location for its new statewide office for black students. success. sacramento state will be the home of the new office, which will oversee and implement recommendations across the 23 csu campuses. those recommendations were articulated in the csu's black student success report. an initial $1.3 million investment will fund the office. sacramento state currently has the largest population of black students across all csu schools. >> the oakland zoo is welcoming a new baby giraffe, and they want your help to name him. the new giraffe is exploring his space and getting to know his five herd mates. the 13 month old male came to oakland from the audubon nature institute in louisiana. the move was recommended by the association of zoos and aquariums as part of its species survival plan. zoo officials say giraffes face multiple threats in the wild. >> the predominant factor really is habitat encroachment. you know, there's less and less
