""you're watching kwwl, we've got you covered. this is the news at ten." good evening everyone, i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. our top story tonight -- forests across the southeast are in flames tonight. with thousands of acres burning around great smoky mountains national park in tennessee -- another round of lighting and high winds are expected to only make matters wo here's an overhead look at the widespread fires in gatlinburg, tennessee. emergency crews in the area say the fires are now responsible for three deaths. fires also continue to burn in neighboring states. dan scheneman has more tonight. more than 80-thousand acres are burning across the southeast....about half of those acres are in north carolina where thousands of firefighters are working around the clock. "yeah there was a couple times where we stood there and the starts running up trees and stuff."

"this fire's so challenging because the fuel is so extremely dry and because the terrain is very very steep and those two combined we're not able to put tractors or people been destroyed some areas have been evacuated and residents are worried. "scary. yeah, we gotta house down there." a nasa photo shows how are....smoke billowing up to 10-thousand feet in the air. right now there is little rain in the forecast and it's not clear when the fires will finally be controlled. dan scheneman nbc news. at least 14 fires totaling almost 15-thousand acres are burning in the

tonight --- the first step in what organizers hope will be many towards a solution to waterloo's violence. we are the village --- hosted by the local n- double-a -c-p --- held tonight at the center for that arts welcomed community members of all background to come together. kwwl's jessica hartman was at the event --- she joins us live from made this event different from other anti-voilence events held recently? ron -- probably the biggest different tonight --- was action. people in the community are tired of talking and ready to take action. three murders --- this year --- two in the month of july -- his suspected killers awaiting trial. then this month darrell lanier and talasa wrigt shot and killed in seperate incidents --

community members stepping up and asking how can we help? "it is young people dying and we are sitting in our homes like it does not matter. so tonight, we are going to come up with some solutions and we are "we are dealing with alot of kids that are saying, 'you want me to put a gun down? someone is trying to kill me.'" n order to change that ---people are rolling up there solutions. "as a community if we don't look for change then . . .how can we expect them to change, if we are always calling them a thug or an addict. we just have to have a new mind and refresh ourselves." "these kids need somebody. they don't need us to just talk all day and everyday about what we can and can't do.

became ill after eating at this american legion building. police there say all eight people who became seriously sick live together -- and no one outside hospital. but many others out of the 835 people who ate the meal did report feeling sick afterward. "it was a nice dinner... turkey, coffee... about one o'clock in the morning i woke up with started throwing up really bad - i mean really bad. i was sick." event said in a statement the source of the illness is not known -- and thier dinner is just one in a number of possibilities the an iowa woman is facing a felony charge -- after police say they found her young daughter alone in the rain wearing only pajamas.

wright county jail tonight -- she's charged with neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. this stemming from an incident earlier this month in galt -- where police say they found ceplecha's two-year-old daughter outside in the rain without shoes, wearing pajamas. they say the child and another one- year-old of the woman's were taken into protective custody. meanwhile -- an investigation is 18- year-old prisoner in iowa. timothy fluharty junior died in custody over the weekend -- in southeast iowa's jefferson county. police there say he was arrested on suspicison of marijuana possession and taken to the fairfield jail early saturday morning. he began to show signs of an unknown medical issue about three hours later -- and died. an autopsy will be performed as

woman crashes right into it. it happened just after seven-30 this morning at mulgrew's tavern in east dubuque, illinois. police say the woman was driving down the street when her brakes went out. she ended up crossing both time. a man who lives right above the tavern heard it happen. "it was just like a loud cannon going off. woke me up out of bed, looked out the windown and saw a blazer through the front door of the mulgrew's bar." some injuries. she was taken to an area hospital, but has since been released tonight. everyone else is okay. alliant energy is hoping to bring new jobs to cedar rapids--with an industrial park the plan is to have it here-- near the corner of 76th avenue and edgewood road southwest-- and streching for 13-hundred acres. alliant says the big "to be a big impact for the

we still haven't seen any significant snow build up here in iowa quite yet -- but others are dealing with the worst of winter. one state in the northeast is dealing with dangerous ice conditions along ron this video showing some of the destructive crashes in vermont today -- where black ice has caused multiple crashes, road closures and at least one death. police there warning drivers to stay off the roads, if possible. further south -- a volcano is once again active, spewing ash into the sky. check out the popocatepetl volcano once again showing some

can see -- and is mexico's second tallest volcano. the volcano is about 44 miles east of mexico city. yesterday's string of severe weather here in iowa getting some official results tonight -- with four confirmed tornados touching the ground throughout iowa. we received viewer videos of several of the funnel clouds -- tornados touched down in parkersburg, grundy center, radcliffe and montezuma. all were e-f zero tornados. coming up on kwwl -- a deadly airplane crash shocks an entire continent. the latest on the colombian plane

girls dorm building in turkey. police there say the fire may and killed twelve people -- including 11 teenagers. at least 22 other girls were hurt in the fire, according to a government official. an investigation into the fire is continuing. meanwhile -- fre crews are battling a large pipeline explosion in missouri tonight. no injuries have been reported in the fire -- and crews say they're trying to figure out who owns the pipeline. they say the pipeline

part of her finger off while shooting a pit bull that she says was trying to attack her. we want to warn you that the video may be disturbing for some viewers. over thanksgiving weekend -- the deputy responded to a call about a homeless man who hadee bbin tten by a pitbull. in the video -- you see her approach a mobile home when owner -- then the animal lunges at bray. bray shoots the dog and part of her left ring finger. continuing coverage now -- into a deadly plane crash in colombia. daylight pictures from the scene show wreckage sprawled across a mountainside -- rescuers have been able to rescue six people alive from the crash site -- but at least 71 people died in the crash. an investigation into the sudden crash is ongoing in colombia.

soccer team and 21 journalists -- and crashed while on its way to the finals of a south american championship. fans, friends and family members of the soccer team's players have been gathering at the team's stadium as they mourn. one fan said the players knew their fans well and would say hello to them in the street and know them by name. almost all of the 40-plus team died in the crash late last night. here in the midwest -- nearly two dozen protesters are apprehended during a rush hour minimum wage hike. police took 21 demonstrators into custody after a protest at a busy minneapolis intersection. the demonstration -- part of an effort for a 15-dollar per hour minimum wage hike for fast food workers. coming up next in sports... we had a good one on the hardwood with the waterloo east boys playing host to
