new orleans this weekend. senators grassley and ernst demand answers from the v-a after a veteran takes his own life. curtis gearhart had been receiving treatment for p-t- s-d. but when he went back in to the v-a for recurring headaches, the family was told it would take five or six weeks to see a doctor. gearhart took his own life before that happened. the v-a office of inspector general got back to senator grassley gathering information and have requested more information from the v-a. we will assess all the information and determine our next steps based on our analysis." the inspector general says that process could take 2-months. president obama spent part of his day visiting with wounded soldiers in maryland. the president visits the country's largest military hospital there several times every year... and those visits are private --- out of the public view. the white house says he met with

been arrested -- accused of slashing a woman at a u-s military base in japan. the base is home to the 35-th fighter wing for the u-s air force--, stationed in japan. continuing coverage this morning... buckeye strong. members of the ohio state community come together after an attack on campus. authorities say an 18-year old student plowed into people with a car -- and then started slashing them with a knife. eleven people were injured in the attack... they're all expected to be happen that are unfortunate or that are hurtful to us. when those things happen, what really works for us is to come together in the spirit of unity. and i encourage everyone in our buckeye community to think clearly about that. the alleged attacker was shot and killed by police. in detroit -- a community held a candlelight vigil for an officer killed in the line of duty last week. officer collin rose was shot in

the time of the shooting. he later died fellow officers called rose a great talent and a great officer for the community. his funeral will take place on thursday. brakes fail -- a car crashes into a business. it happened at mulgrew's tavern in east dubuque, illinois yesterday. people were inside at the time. "it was just like a loud cannon door of the mulgrew's bar." some injuries. she was taken to a hospital, but has since been released. everyone else is okay. new details this morning... a wrong way crash on highway 20 shows how our officers put their lives at risk to protect and serve us every day. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in waterloo... we now have waterloo police officer mark

crash on highway 20 yesterday around 4:30 in the morning. nissen noticed another car headed towards his squad car near the ansborough exit... but was unable to get out of the way in time. when the crash happened -- nissen had his emergency lights and siren on.. this officer was actually responding to calls of a wrong-way driver on highway 20... he knew he may be headed towards a dangerious situation... shows that our men and women in blue risks their lives every day just this year.. two police officers in des moines were killed after a wrong-way driver crashed into them. live in waterloo... amanda gilbert... news 7 kwwl. the other driver in the crash... 27- year-old erick james anderson... was charged with an o-w-i second offense... no insurance.... failure to have control... and driving

one person is dead and three others hurt after a car crashes off a los angles freeway, landing on a homeless camp. police say at least one person was trapped under the car. it's still not clear what caused the crash. the truck driver who crashed into a van carrying comedian tracy morgan two years ago, pleads guilty. he was driving a wal-mart truck when he crashed into morgan's van on the new jersey turnpike. morgan suffered serious injuries in the crash and comedian james mcnair was killed. a miraculous recovery. a boy who nearly died after getting hit by a car is now communicating with his family. leighton pullin was hit by a car crossing a waterloo street last month. the seven-year- old was rushed to iowa city and has been recovering ever since. the family invited kwwl's lauren moss into leighton's hospital room - to check in on his recovery. give me a thumbs up... a thumbs up....an act of leighton pullin's family in means so much more. i said if you know this is grandma give me a thumbs up, and he went like this and i said

up and he went like that....that was the best feeling in the world. i just wanted to leave work and i did and got here as leighton has been unresponsive for weeks, suffering a fractured skull and brain damage after being hit by truck.. if you ever want to see a miracle this is a miracle, we never thought we would see this just a week ago the last the way he was. now look at him.. "hit it back to me...oh wow, that's a spike." his doctors and nurses at covenant's rehab center, are helping him move, and communicate with his hands. "grab the orange one.." there's a long road ahead-leighton strong..that's our nickname for him, but leighton is fighting hard each and every day..

what it feels like, it's wonderful. one thumb at a time. as you can imagine, his medical expenses have been a lot on the family- a family friend is asking for christmas gifts to send to his list. he feared for his life. that's what a former police officer says facing murder charges. michael slager is charged in the shooting death of walter scott last year. slager has said he stopped scott for a broken tail light... but then he took off running... and officer slager chased after him. shortly after -- the officer shot at him. slager says he now has nightmares and can't sleep. you any indication of compliance

pulled my firearm and i pulled the trigger. if convicted, slager could get 30 years in prison. an oklahoma police officer who shot and killed a man in september will stand trial for manslaughter. officer betty shelby was charged te in september, which was captured on camera. the judge decided to go ahead with the trial after reviewing the video in the courtroom. shelby said he disobeyed her commands and she thought he was trying to get a weapon from his car. but police videos showed crutcher with his arms in the air before the shooting. investigators never found any weapons in his car. working towards a solution. people come together in waterloo to talk about vioelence. this year the city's seen three

know how they can help. the naacp held a work session to try to come up with solutions. all day and everydaaby out what we can and can't do. we can change this community. waterloo is small. we were built on community." the groups filled out forms with their ideas and set up work groups to start implementing the suggestions. a common thread --- more mentoring. an evergreen tree chopped down and that tree was a symbol to them. the illinois couple lost their son twelve years ago. the tree was a gift of remembrance. a tree farm offered a replacement -- but the family wants justice... we are watching a system for the middle of next week that could bring snow to eastern iowa. change is very likely at this point. low pressure is moving just north of the iowa- of snow has ski resorts getting ready for the season. almost a foot and a half of snow has fallen in the last week in breckenridge... which is keeping public works departments busy -- they're working round the clock to keep up. it's coming up on today in iowa.... holiday shoppers can become easy targets for pickpockets. tips from police on how to avoid it coming up.

standoff in a snowstorm. protesters in north dakota have been told to leave. people have been showing up to support the standing rock sioux tribe -- which is upset about which would cover four states, including iowa -- will damage their water governor's evacuation order with winter on the way. after nearly five months of protest, officials are turning up the pressure...telling demonstrators to leave now or face the consequences. but neither the official warnings nor the howling winter weather seem convincing. the morton county sheriff's department warned protesters tuesday that they'll start blocking supplies

a spokeswoman for the department later clarified that they'd only stick to punishing trespassers. members of the standing rock sioux tribe...who originally filed the lawsuit against the pipeline...say they're not budging. "water is sacred. but, it's also good business to protect your water resource." north dakota governor jack dalrymple warned protesters about the winter weather - which will only get worse. he said that first responders will no longer be responsible for rendering aid to those who stay 17 native americans, who've served under the obama administration, signed a letter asking the president to step in - and allow protesters to stay. the c-e-o of the company building the pipeline is also weighing in - trying to convince protesters the pipeline will be safe. "this pipeline is being built where to existing pipelines exist today, that were built through your state in 1982. we've not disturbed any historical sites." i'm yasmin amer reporting. two pipeline protesters, who chained themselves to equipment in

they ran past security to the construction site in pilot mound. that's in boone county -- in central iowa. they chained their wrists together inside a p-v-c pipe. firefighters cut the pipe. a state patrol plane was called in to search for others in the every direct action we deeply believe water is life therefore we must do everything in our human capacity to protect it." pipeline construction sites left in iowa. the area along the des moines river is the one of the last sections of the pipeline left to finish in central iowa that's why protesters are focusing on it. no one got hurt when a pipeline exploded in missouri. this video shows the huge fire in platte county. that's on the western side of the state. the pipeline's owned by enterprise products partners -- out of louisiana. the company says the pipeline moves an ethane--propane mix from kansas.

his life to protect and serve.. he's now out of the hospital with minor injuries. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in waterloo... you can tell us more about what happened. waterloo police officer mark nissen responding to calls about a wrong-way driver on highway 20. he headed toward the area where the driver was- knowing he was headed toward a dangerous situation. when nissen found the driver unable to get out in-time. nissen's car was hit head on shortly after 4:30 in the morning... the officer was taken to allen hospital with minor injuries. this happens just days after a cedar rapids police car was hit while officers were responding to an accident. last spring.. two officers in des moines were killed after a crash with a wrong-way driver.

officer nissen is now out of the hospital... but will be given a that it is a law in iowa to move over and change lanes to create a safe zone for officers on the side of the road. here's another example from the last week -- two cedar rapids police officers taken to the hospital over the weekend. a car hit their s- u-v after they were called to another crash. the in the other car died, matrell watson was 22 years old. his family is now trying to five-year-old -- her dad is gone. "she loves him a lot you know they're young but he was a good dad to her he went to you know all of her preschool stuff and picked her up from daycare." kaitlyn hall also died in the

some people were taken to the life-threatening. two people have serious injuries after a crash on highway 63 south of hudson. it happened yesterday morning. the black hawk county sheriff's office say a car tried to pass a semi, when the driver lost control and hit a truck going the other way. driver in the truck were taken to the hospital. sheer devastation. three people have died and many buildings have burned in the the fires have burned 15-thousand acres so far. the mayor of gatlinburg -- who lost his own home -- says his town will pull together and "it happened so fast it was basically running for their lives." one smoky mountain resort and

now to the white house transition: today, the democrats -- fresh off a brusing election in november -- elect their party leaders. nancy pelosi has been the house democratic leader for 12-years. today she faces a challenge by congressman tim ryan of ohio. ryan says it's time for a change in party leadership. ryan says the party has the right policies, but not the right message. there will be no vote recount -- done by hand -- in wisconsin. green party presidential candidate jill stein has been calling for the recount of the presidential a judge says the recount will begin today -- but it will be done by attorney did not prove a hand recount was necessary. mitt romney is now praising the president-elect months after calling donald trump a phony. romney had dinner with trump considered for secretary of state. the last few weeks, he has i've seen in the transition effort. the people he's selected as members of his cabinet are solid and effective, capable people, and some of them i

reince priebus, who will be the white house chief of staff, also met with trump and romney. the president- elect made jobs a big focus of his campaign -- and he's already getting a boost even before he moves into the white house. carrier says it struck a deal with donald trump to keep almost one thousand jobs in indiana. he -- and the vice- president elect -- who's from indiana will announcement. carrier is an air conditioning company. earlier this year -- it said it would close one plant in indiana and move manufacturing to mexico. today, u-n-i's interim president gets to share his vision for the job he wants on a permanent basis. there's also a public forum this afternoon with jim wohlpart. he's been serving as interim president since bill ruud left earlier this year. neil theobald - another finalist for the president's job -- talked about his plans. he says they have to recruit a more diverse student bod and

jerry moses has passed away. he was 65. moses was a part of east high's incredible seven year unbeaten streak in football in the late 60's and early 70's. he was twice named a first team all-state running back before moving on to iowa state.

also as someone who tried to make a positive silence in his memory at the east - waverly-shell rock game. services are now pending. the iowa men's basketball team is already young. now it's shorthanded. iowa has lost talented freshman tyler cook for three weeks with a fracture in his right index finger. last night, the hawks on the road facing notre dame. early on -- another freshman -- jordan bohannon -- with the three. moments later -- bohannon again -- he 23 points. iowa would lead 52-50 with about 15 mintues to go, but then the irish would go on a run and pull away. the hawks lose their third there's so much green to enjoy during the holiday season. an n-f-l team known for that color

picked their christmas tree for lambeau field. it's a thirty-five foot tall spruce. one of the owners says the tree has been in his life since he was in first grade -- but he's now happy to see it go. the tree will serve as the centerpiece for the 11th annual festival of lights at lambeau on saturday. when you're raising animals, sometimes - you look for any trick in the book to solve a problem. polly the goat - had a big problem. her owner in new jersey says polly has a severe case of anxiety. nothing seemed to help, until one day the woman put an old duck costume on polly as a joke. the next thing she knew, the anxiety was gone and polly was online that went viral. "every day i get messages from people saying 'i'm battling depression or i'm battling little goats and if they can do
