outbreak hit several southern states overnight. among the hardest hit areas was the northeast alabama - tennessee border... tim pham has more for us this afternoon. ripped through the southeast destroying many homes and businesses. right now we're in a community that is at a stand-still. power is out everywhere in benton, tn where down, the roof was torn off and debris is blocking several roads and shutting down some major highways. we spoke with the benton chief of police he tells tells us that there are at least a few fatalities. right now a shelter is open for those displaced from the tornado at the local high school. the national weather service say they expect the flash-flood warning to last through early afternoon. back to you.

buildings have burned in the tennessee wildfires. the national park service says the fires have burned 15-thousand acres so far. the mayor of gatlinburg -- who lost his own home -- says his town will difficult thing to watch... "it happened so fast it was basically running for their lives." spa -- with more than 100 buildings -- has likely been destroyed.. the flames came extremely close to dollywood... but the theme park was spared significant damage. the park is closed until friday. employees plan to focus their efforts the next two days on supporting the community. a vigil is held to remember brazilian soccer players killed in a plane crash. the charter plane went down monday night with 68 passengers

71 people died in the crash. six had been rescued alive - but one later died in hospital. two pipeline protesters, who chained themselves to equipment in iowa, are now behind bars. they ran past security to the construction site in pilot mound. that's in boone county -- in central iowa. they chained their wrists together inside a p-v-c pipe. firefighters cut the pipe. a state patrol plane was called "we fully understand the risk of deeply believe water is life therefore we must do everything in our human capacity to protect it." there aren't a lot of active pipeline construction sites left in iowa. the area along the des moines river is the one of the last iowa. that's why protesters are focusing on it. new details in a multi-state

men could have fixed more games -- had the conspiracy not been discovered.. eddie tipton worked for the iowa lottery. he's accused of fixing games to win - he's set to go on trial in february. his brother tommy also charged in the case and is set to stand trial in texas in january. a cedar rapids man -- arrested for having child porn on his cell phone. and it was found whiile the phone was being repaired. employees at batteries and bulbs saw it on the phone -- and then and now faces charges. new at noon: criminal charges will not be filed against the charlotte, north carolina police officer who shot and killed an african american driver. today, the mecklenburg county district attorney announced that officer brentley vinson won't be prosecuted for shooting keith scott back in september. both vinson and scott are african american. the shooting sparked days of protests, riots and demonstrations. police are concerned this announcement could prompt another round of

between police and citizens in which deadly force is used are among the most important cases my office will ever handle. we have a duty to objectively analyze the totality of the evidence and circumstances and that means we must face difficult issues." police today say officers saw scott with a handgun and marijuana before they even approached him. working toward a solution to stop the violence. this year the city of waterloo has seen three murders -- all victims under the age of 23. community members want to know how they can help. the naacp held a work session, trying to come up with they don't need us to just talk all day and everyday about what we can and can't do. we can change this community.

health ... and the nation's economy. a new study from the rand corporation found sleep deprivation leads to the loss of more than one million working days a year. researchers estimate that -- along with a tired, less productive workforce -- costs the economy more than 400 billion dollars a year! people who sleep less than six hours a night also have a 13-percent higher risk of early death ... than those who get seven to nine hours of shut-eye. facebook is bringing classic video games like "pac-man" and "space invaders" to its users. it's rolling out a new and free feature called "instant games." it lets you play video games solo on facebook news feed or challenge friends and play within the messenger app. the aim is to keep people on facebook as long as possible, which is easier -- with more content available on our

12 years. outgoing vice president joe biden will be honored on the senate floor next month by senators from both sides of the political aisle. senator chris coons led the charge to honor biden. coons holds the same seat from delaware that biden held for more than three decades -- before becoming vice president. there will be no vote recount -- done by hand -- in wisconsin. green party presidential candidate jill stein has been presidential vote in that state. a judge says the recount will begin today -- but it will be done by a machine. the judge saying stein's attorney did not prove a hand recount was necessary. mitt romney is now praising the president-elect months after calling donald trump a phony. romney had dinner with trump last night -- the second time considered for secretary of the last few weeks, he has i've seen in the transition effort. the people he's selected

people, and some of them i know very well." reince priebus, who will be the white house chief of staff, also met with trump and romney. a sixth felon from waterloo is convicted and sentenced for voting illegally in the 2012 presidential election. a judge fining robert anthony 750 dollars and ordered him to do anthony was one of eight people from waterloo -- with prior felonies -- charged with voting in 2012. prosecutors say they lost their voting rights because of their prior convictions. precinct workers did not check an electronic database of inelligble felons. a kwwl follow-up this morning. the ohio state community comes together for a "buckeye strong" event on campus. this comes after someone plowed a car into people, then started slashing with a knife. eleven people got hurt. the university president urging people to move forward in a

encourage everyone in our buckeye community to think clearly about that. an officer shot and killed the suspect. a vigil held in honor of an officer killed in the line of duty. fellow officers call collin rose a great talent and a great officer for the community. the wayne state university university officer was shot the suspect was later arrested. a miraculous recovery. a boy who nearly died after getting hit by a car is now communicating with his family. leighton pullin was hit by a car crossing a waterloo street last month. the seven-year- old was rushed to iowa city and has been recovering ever since. the family invited kwwl's lauren moss into leighton's hospital room - to check in on his recovery. give me a thumbs up... a thumbs up....an act of he went like this and i said if
