plane crash that killed nearly an entire brazilian soccer team hits very close to home for an eastern iowa man. here's a look at the crash in colombia earlier this week -- wreckage sprawled across a mountainside. the pilot of the plane told air traffic control that the plane ran out of fuel -- and was in electric failure. amazingly -- six people were rescued alive from the crash -- but at least 71 people died. professional soccer team and 21 journalists -- on its way to the finals of a south american championship. the shock from the crash reaches all the way to iowa. kwwl's kristin rogers catching up with a coach for an area professional indoor soccer team. he has a close connection to many killed in the crash. kristin joins us live in cedar

there he says he knew 35 people who were killed in this tragedy-- he is from brazil and played for the chapecoense soccer team for six years. a deadly plane crash thousands of miles away but it hit very close to home --for chico perisotto "i'm still in shock. i can't believe together for like six years and chico is from chapeco --and started his professional soccer career on the chapecoense soccer team-- "they gave me the opportunity to follow my career and be a proffessional soccer place." now coaching da coach hewerton moreira who is also from brazil-- "we have a game in the east stays in your mind." chico--telling us--he wishes he could be there for the families back home--but feels have their families behind, kids, wives, parents. so we need everyone to like pray, at least pray for them because we are far away we cannot do anything so if we pray i think we are

as you heard mark say -- a few flurries in the area. winter makes a mild start in waterloo with a few flakes this morning and afternoon. some of the first flurries oh the season falling to the ground -- but not sticking so far. meantime -- department of transportation workers standing by for the first big snow. kwwl's macleod hagemman joins us live in waterloo m mac? keep in mind -- this time last year -- we already saw our first big snow of the season. so -- department of transporation workers taking advantage of the warmer weather to be winter ready. tanks are full -- blades are sharp -- and workers have enough salt for iowa roads. waterloo department of transportation highway supervisor -- barry thede -- says not only are drivers ready to hit the roads -- but recent warmer weather has given workers a chance to finish those

prescott invited more than 25 current st. patrick catholic school students with him to pick out the toys- teaching them the joy of giving back.. and they had a fun time doing it.. from fishing poles to stuffed animals, these 7th and 8th graders were stacking their carts up at walmart. each student with a smile on their face. prescott is a navy veteran who now lives in new york, but growing up in the cedar valley, his way..in a way thats special to him. i grew up in this area when tft gives the opp. for families to have acess to toys, you know cause it's all about the kids. again he's donating 10 thousand dollars worth of toys to the local toys for tots here. he says every child deserves to wake up to a gift on christmas morning..

is consistent." celebrating successes with a deep-rooted care for the people behind them. a vision professor and president of the uni faculty union-joe gorton says he too would like to see. "you know presidents come and go, regents come and go, students you know there here for a few years , faculty, we're here for 20-30 years, 35 years, we are the enduring values, the most important resource to the university. the president has to have policies and commitments that are in accordance with those values." the third finalist-who was named today is mark nook. he's the current chancellor at montana state university in billings montana.

live in cedar falls, elizabeth amanieh, news 7 kwwl. the board of regents are expecting to meet again on december sixth to interview the three finalists where they hope to choose a new president. new at six tonight - an area teacher assigning her seventh grade students a knitting project - to make scarves for the less fortunate. mrs. velasquez at solon middle school is having her students do the some of those students -- decked out in their football pads knitting in the locker room. last year her students made a record 250 scarves. now take a look inside mrs. velasquez's classroom students fingers working away to knit the scarves an act of kindness the scarves will be donated to low- income second graders -- a way of honoring the 20 second graders

-- students have already knitted over 700 scarves since september "it's crazy because last year i thought that was the most we could ever do but then this year whole room now is filled with scarves. we had to use another room because we ran out of room in this one." students finish their knitting this week. students in cedar rapids, iowa city, waterloo, and des moines. coming up... after two straight games against team comes home to face a familiar foes.

after back to back losses to seventh ranked xavier... the northern iowa men's basketball team looks to get back in the win the panthers host the patriots at the mcleod center in a game that tips off at seven. the young panthers were impressive in finishing second to xavier in the battle 4 atlantis in orlando florida... uni picked up impressive wins over arizona state and okla during the tournament. the panthers now face a goerge mason team for which they are very familiar... northern iowa handled george mason 73-65 last year in fairfax virginia. the patriots entered tonight's game red-hot winners of three in a row. they are starting four guards--they have a guy playing on the block that can score the basketball he plays really hard and is a good rebounder and so far they have two or three guys that can shoot the three ball and shoot
