""you're watching kwwl, we've got you covered. this is the news at ten." good evening everyone, i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. a taste of winter today -- with snow flurries greeting some of us in eastern wa today -- where the first snow of the season fell, but not enough to stick to the ground. let's go to storm track seven chief meteorologist mark schnackenberg -- he has a first look at tonight's weather. from the kwwl stormtrack here is additional forecast information from the kwwl

"all of her china, all of her silverware.. everything's gone." in all, flames scorched some 17-thousand acres of land. more than 400 buildings in sevier county were destroyed.... it's the largest fire in the volunteer state in a century. effected. our top story tonight -- newly elected and making history as the first african america linn county supervisor - stacey walker is wasting no time getting to work in the cedar rapids community. tonight -- walker is calling for a special prosecutor in the grand jury incitement of a cedar rapids police officer who shot and paralyzed 37 year old jerime mitchell earlier this month during an attempted traffic stop. kwwl's jessica hartman speaking announcement during a keynote speech at a benefit for mitchell. linn county supervisor stacey walker has called for the most unbiased and fair way for the evidence in the case to be presented to the grand jury who will determine if the officer will face charges. early in the morning of november 1st officer lucas jones attempted pull jerime mitchell over. authorities say there was a struggle and jones shot mitchell. now a grand jury has

patient and allow dci to investigate. then on november 18 walker joined those demanding the video be released. now pointing to linn county attorney jerry vander sanden as the reason for the request. "jerry vander sanden has been involved with a case prior to this that involved the same officer in an officer involved shooting. he has to maintain a professional working relationship with local law enforcement so i just think it would be great for everyone involved." walker is refering to a case in october of last year in which officer jones was involved in a fatal shooting and was determined by dci to be a justified use of force. mitchell spoke to the benefit crowd from his hospital bed via skype thanking people for their support. in cedar rapids jessica

being selected --- presentation of the evidence followed by deliberation is expected to start before the end of the year. in a kwwl follow up -- as an area man has very close ties to a deadly brazilian soccer team. here's a look at the crash in colombia earlier this week. the pilot of the plane told air traffic control that the plane ran out of fuel -- and was in electric failure. the plane was carrying the team and a group of journalists on their way to a tournament. a cedar rapids coach used to play for the team.

played for chapecoense for six years-- that's where he began his professional soccer career -- he now coaches cedar rapids rampage. he says he's still in shock about the tragedy in colombia. "i'm still in shock. i can't believe i lost 35 good friends that i played together, i worked together for like six years and know when i'm going to believe this." several players on the cedar rapids rampage-- are also from brazil. -- a cell phone repairman calls police... after finding child pornography on the phone he's fixing. cedar rapids police say 33-year- old jeremy rodriguez faces

confronted rodriguez when he went to batteries and bulbs to pick up his phone in july of county jail, but has since bonded out. the opening of a 360-million dollar hospital construction project is delayed. the university of iowa stead family children's hospital was supposed to open on december tenth. now -- there's no exact date for when it'll open. administration saying perhaps around february it's been under construction for four years giving back, with meaning. a veteran returns back to his hometown in the cedar valley, to donate to the local toys for tots.. but he's not alone, he invited local students with him, teaching them the beauty of helping others.. kwwl's lauren moss joined them on their shopping trip this afternoon. she has our story for us.. as a child, dave prescott there...to help pick out the they might like that...good pick sophia." 7th and 8th graders at not for themselves "we need more boy stuff"

former student and veteran dave prescott- i grew up in this several times, so i definitely know what it is like to have some very thin christmases he flew in from new for tots when he first emailed me i local toys for tots when he first emailed me i honeslty thought someone was pulling my leg..cause we have never had someone do something like this before. all toys handpicked- by current students. i think they might like cars or something like this before. action figures... some kids dont have as much ..its peoples responsibilty so they can have a little bit of one of them the beauty of giving back. "it shows them the meaning of christmas, you know it's about helping other people not just yourself." it gives them a sense of giving..you are amazed how much they want to gvie to someone else..even to kids who

storms that include a dozen confirmed tornadoes. the worst of the storms happening in northern alabama -- where at least five people died including three inside an alabama mobile home that was in the path of the severe weather. the storms also destroying parts of planes and airport hangars. several more people were hurt throughout the area. meanwhile -- a waterspout turned tornado came on land and moved through the florida panhandle today. take a look -- the tornado was care destin. wild weather also striking in georgia -- look at strong winds there blowing all sorts of debris into the air in atlanta. a tornado warning was alos issued there -- with sightings near the city and reports of damage. thousands of people lost power in the storms -- but there's no word on any injuries tonight. coming up on kwwl -- it's one down, one to go in the search for inmates who made a thanksgiving

from a california jail has been captured -- while the other remains on the loose tonight. authorities say laron campbell has been arrested without incident. campbell was found after he crashed through the ceiling of his sister's attic, where he'd been

other inmates escaped thanksgiving morning when they cut through bars covering a window and used bedsheets to rappel down to the ground. the two other inmates were arrested immediately -- while chavez remains at large. meanwhile -- a frightening situation along a road in maine -- when a snowplow catches fire and explodes. an employee tried to use a fire extinguisher -- but as you can see, the flames were too intense. a volunteer fire crew arrived soon after and put out the fire. luckily -- no one was hurt. three people who pleaded guilty to robbing an eastern iowa bank are sentenced to time in federal prison. katherine pihl of tiffin, stanley mosley junior of coralville and lance monden of cedar rapids were sentenced this week in u-s district court. pihl will serve two years, while mosley was given 11 and monden ten. the three were arrested seven minutes after robbing the palo savings bank in may.

it's game night at the mcleod center in cedar falls---- the northern iowa panthers back home tonight to the george mason patriots-- uni looks to snap a two game losing streak against a george mason team on a three game winning streak. head coach ben jacobson getting his team ready for battle.... and the panthers copme out firing--- juwann mcloud drives and gets the first basket of the night---- but that would be uni's last field goal for almost eleven minutes as the panthers fall behind by ten... uni freshman spencer haldeman comes off the bench and gives the panthers some instant offense... haldeman nails back to back threes to pull the panthers within four. haldeman maintains his hot hand --firing in another three pointer--he had a game high 16 points

defenders for the jam... the panthers led 28-24 at halftime.. but northern iowa shoots just 26 percent from the field---and fall to george mason 54-50 acc/big ten men's challenge --rick pitino and 14th ranked louisville taking on 15th ranked purdue... purdue trails big in the second half when carsen edwards hits a 3- pointer to cut the louisville adel shakes his defender and nails an 18-footer. 49-32 cards. and it is all lousivlle the rest of the way---- ryan mcmahon in front of his own bench for a deep three-pointer. louisville beats purdue 71-64 tonight in women's college basketball.. top ranked notre dame visits the iowa hawkeyes in the acc/big ten

but lisa bluder had her hawks ready to fight tonight.. the hawkeyes trail by 14 early before fighting back--megan gustafson gets inside for two in transition... later ---ally disterhoft knocks down three of her game high 18 points--- iowa trails by just 41-33 at the break... the hawks go on a 10-2 run to start the second half--megan gust eleven rebounds-- iowa is within two at 43-41 in the third period... but notre dame is just too good--finishing strong--lindsay allen bounces in two of her 11 points to go along with eight iowa falls to the top ranked irish 73-58.
