[graphic] more than thirty tornados reported in six states in 48 hours... at least five people killed... dozens injured.... with dozens in breman [bree-man] georgia, high school students one of many close calls... during the first deadly tornado this morning several people are still hospitalized, some of them with critical injuries. the national weather service now says that 34 tornados are confirmed in seven states.. and the city of one of its volunteer fighterfighters and his wife were two people killed in yesterday's tornado. jacob rascon, nbc news, rosalie, alabama. after the storms turned deadly

system moved east. this morning, a man led deputies on a nearly 45-minute chase throughout black hawk county -- and part of buchanan county. deputies at the black hawk county sheriff's office took troy postel- vargason into custody. they say he ran through a stop sign and took off when a deputy tried to pull him over. he's being charged with multiple driving offenses. a woman was in the car with him -- she is not facing charges right now. a lawsuit filed by the family of a woman killed in an eastern iowa mall will not be moving forward. alexander kozak -- a mall security guard -- shot and killed andrea farrington inside the coral ridge mall last year. kozak was convicted earlier this year. according to our coverage partners at the iowa city press-citizen -- the lawsuit alleged that the mall failed to provide reasonable care and security for farrington. it also claimed the security provider was negligent in hiring kozak. the case was scheduled to go to trial next year -- but the lawsuit has been dismissed.

newest member of the linn county board of supervisors is calling for a special prosecutor for a cedar rapids officer-involved shooting case. earlier this month an officer shot jerime mitchelle following a traffic stop. a grand jury will determine whether the officer should face charges. supervior stacey walker "one of the things i hope everyone in the community to very high standards. --lucas jones -- was involved in a deadly shooting last year. iowa police departments are remembering officers who died this year. two iowa companies created this christmas tree to honor them. the tree skirt displays the names and badge numbers of the five fallen officers. this week its on display at the urbandale police department. continuing coverage -- today the third and final candidate in the running to become u-n-i's next president visits campus. mark nook is the current chancellor at montana state

received his masters in astrophysics at iowa state u-n-i's interim president james wohkpart outlining his vision for the university -- should he get the job. he previously served as provost and says he has an understanding of the strengths within the campus. but he calls on a need to to regain control of uni's them find their purpose and passion in life and marry it to a vocation so that they can go out in the world. and offer themselves out into the world. the board of regents is expected to select the new president next week. it's the season of giving and one veteran is teaching eastern iowa kiddos the importance of helping those less fortunate. dave prescott flew in from new york to donate 10 thousand dollars worth of toys to toys for tots. he also invited more than 25

new at noon-- 11 people who were held hostage inside a bank in florida - are now safe. deputies say one suspect tried to rob a bank this morning. at least 11 people were held inside the bank.. released and the suspect is in if any of the hostages were injured. a deal has been reached to allow the pentagon to forgive debts owed by thousands of california national guard soldiers. the defense department has been trying to regain about 20- million dollars in re-enlistment bonuses paid out to the soldiers who served in iraq and afghanistan. the deal is part of a larger defense bill -- it should be voted on in the

a police officer is now dead. this all hapepning in washington state. police say they responded to a domestic violence situation -- with a suspect barricaded inside a home with a gun. the suspect shot the officer several times. after the shooting-- police were able to get adults and children out of the home. the home "we've suffered a great loss, and i think the community has here appreciates the kind thoughts and the prayers that are going out to us." line of duty in tacoma since 1997 new details as prosecutors decide not to charge a police officer in the death of keith scott. police spend the night dealing with protestors. more than 1- hundred protestors took to the streets near police

and demanding justice for scott. police are urging protesters to stay on the sidewalks, but many have spilled onto the streets, leading to arrests. a police officer shoots and kills a man wanted in a string of robberies. kansas city officers pulled the suspect over, and initially he followed the orders. but then, according to police, he grabbed one of the officer's gun. officers immediately shot the man, who died later at the hospital. no officers were hurt. draw any conclusions about what led to the attack at ohio state university. but -- they say they believe the suspect may have been inspired by isis and a former al- qaeda leader. an f-b-i special agent says the investigation is on-going --and "as i've said, we only believe that he may have been inspired by isil. in the past they have claimed responsibility when the assailant has been dead that can't refute that, so, that

anyone else helped the suspect in the attack. kidnapped, held for a week, then dropped off in a spot 150 miles from where she was taken. investigators are still looking for the suspects. the woman was missing for three weeks until investigators found her along an interstate in california thanksgiving morning.
