president-elect donald trump begins his post- election "thank you" tour. his first rally was in ohio yesterday. the stop is expected to be one in a series of stops in states that trump won on election night. in his speech -- trump vowed to unify the nation.. and put america's interests first... "now that you put me in this done, believe me don't worry about it. it would be easier if you helped, but that's all trump also making a big announcement at the rally -- trump will nominate marine corps general, james mattis for secretary of defense. trump referred to mattis by his nickname "mad dog" ... describing him as "a true general's general." mattis retired in 2013 after serving as the commander of the u-s central command. continuing coverage this morning of a deadly plane crash. the mayor of the home of the

team when the jet hit a mountainside. the mayor said he went to the to brazil. 71 people died -- only 6 survived. a wake is planned in brazil this weekend. this morning -- a first-hand look at some of the damage left behind by deadly wildfires. the streets of gatlinburg, tennessee appear empty as the area is recovering. 11 people have now died in wildfires burning in tennessee. more than 14- thousand the wildfires spread monday night. more than 17- thousand acres have burned so far -- damaging or destroying dozens of homes and businesses. firefighters there taking this well-deserved rest. they'd been working for about 30 straight hours before this happened. all of these fire- fighters returned home without injury. nearly a dozen people were taken hostage during a robbery attempt at a florida bank. deputies say the suspect made

gun at their heads. he eventually released 11 hostages. deputies say two other hostages who were hiding in the building helped the swat team enter the building. "it was like a dream, i couldn't air i know he meant business, so it was kind of scary. it was real scary." thankfully, no one got hurt. a seven year old dies after a school van is involved in a crash. investigators in texas t it was rear-ended by a pick-up truck. a seven-year-old girl died and 11 others were injured. all are listed in fair condition. the cause of the crash is being investigated, but police believe the sun may have blinded the truck driver as it came over a hill. four middle school students and two adults hurt when a private school bus crashes through a wall near a home. this happening in florida. police say a car did not stop at a stop sign and the bus swerved to avoid hitting it, but ending

injuries -but did have to be taken to the hospital. driving more than one-hundred miles per hour -- weaving in an out of traffic -- and streaming it all live on facebook. according to rhode island state police -- the driver lost control of the car, hit a dump truck and crashed into a barrier. he's now in the hospital in critical condition -- and if he recovers -- will likely face charges. five thousand dollars worth of damage after a car hits a cow in eastern iowa. fayette county -- along 210th street west of hawkeye. the sheriff's office there says a 24-year-old woman hit the cow while driving west bound. the woman and her two passengers were not hurt. buzz aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, is recovering at a new zealand hospital after being evacuated from the south pole. the former nasa astronaut was visiting antarctica - as a tourist - when he got sick. the tour company said he had

aldrin is 86 years old. in a kwwl follow-up -- a book, some consider controversial, will still be allowed in one area school district. one parent brought forward a complaint against the book the perks of being a wallflower. but after a lengthy meeting ..that book can still be used. the committee "i think what stuck out most to me was just the fact of how much this book can really impact people. there were so many people who said they they have issues and they're not alone, and i think that's a really big part." the parent who brought forward the complaint asked for teachers to give parents the heads up when a school district in virginia considering banning classic novels - after a parent filed a complaint about racial slurs used in the books. adventures of huckleberry finn... both books are classics read in classrooms across the country. five years in prison for receiving child porn. forrest rindels -- of waterloo -- entered a guilty plea earlier this year. he must also pay a one-thousand a former iowa businessman will serve three years on b kelly freese must also pay more than one-million dollars to lincoln savings bank in waterloo. freese was indicted in 20-13 while living in brazil -- he returned to the u-s this year. he says he ran into financial trouble after buying brazilian land to farm. authorities say freese overstated assets when applying for bank loans. wells fargo funds genocide. that's according to some protesters against the dakota access pipeline. they're demanding wells fargo stop funding companies helping to build the pipeline.

"it's being built in a place in a place thats going to poison the waters of people who have already been targeted by genocide by the united states." the pipeline would run through four states including iowa but the biggest protests have been in north dakota. ace hardware on the defense -- denying its banning sales to pipeline protesters. it comes following rumors on social media -- claiming law enforcement was asking ace dw that coule be used at the camps where pipeline protesters are gathering. ace says it has not banned any sales. more than a hundred employees in the area will soon be without a job. it's happening at transamerica in cedar rapids. the company will be offering separation benefits for those 120 laid off employees. campus tours wrapping up with the final candidate for uni's presidential search speaking to students and staff. kwwl's jessica hartman has an

thousands of baby bath seats and chairs are being recalled for a drowning hazard. the recall involves all

they plan to re- open by mid february. a fire breaks out at a salvage yard. it happened in belmont, wisconsin. that about 30 minutes from dubuque. the owner says six employees were on site when the fire broke out -- but none of them got hurt. he says they'll work with investigators to figurt it's been one year today since a couple opened fire at a holiday party. it happened in san bernardino, california. 14 people died -- 21 others were injured. the couple was later killed in a shootout with police. a memorial bike ride happening this morning and a community gathering tonight. a tragic story this morning. a 14 year old boy has been charged in the shooting deaths of his mother and younger brother. the bodies were found in their home in pennsylvania -- with a gunshot to the head.

dispatchers that his father shot his mother and brother. he later changed his story -- telling troopers that if his father would have been home -- "this is a very horrific time down here in the new stanton area. to have two individuals shot in their home while they're sleeping is traumatic." the teen faces two counts of criminal homicide and tun he's being charged as an adult. four police officers receive an award -- after saving a man's life. you're looking at what happened at a miami airport back in october. the man collapsed in the t- s-a line. other passengers tried to help him. that's when four officers rushed in. they did c-p-r and used a defibrillator machine to get his heart started before paramedics arrived. this week -- officers received their award -- and it was given he calls the officers angels... "these men and women go out
